2010 NFL Season
With all the training camp news I keep hearing, I sure am getting excited for football season to begin. Did you know this is the 91st season the National Football League has had.
Yes, they started on August 20, 1920 with eleven teams as the American Professional Football Association. The league changed its name to the National Football League in 1922. Super Bowl XLV will be February 6, 2011 in Texas.
On Thursday, September 9 at 8:35 p.m. EDT, the 2010 NFL season will begin. The game will be broadcast live on NBC. The first game is at the Louisiana Superdome, between the Super Bowl XLIV winning New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings.
The new Meadowlands Stadium will host two games opening weekend. The New York Giants will play on Sunday with a 1 PM EDT kickoff against the Carolina Panthers. The New York Jets will open ESPN’s Monday Night Football schedule against the Baltimore Ravens the next night.
The regular season will be 17 weeks of fierce football action. Each team vying for their playoff spot. The 2010 regular season will use a schedule modified for the first time since 2002. The schedule was modified to ease the travel of east coast teams to the west coast twice in one season.
The entire Week 17 schedule, to be played on January 2, 2011, will consist of only divisional contests to increase competition after several cases over the last few seasons of players on playoff bound teams resting their regular starters and playing their reserves.
The post season will begin January 8 with the wild card week. Followed by divisional playoffs then the NFC and AFC Championship games. After that the remaining two teams are off to Cowboys Stadium in North Texas, where Super Bowl XLV will be held February 6, 2011.
